Fresnel Lenses

The French physicist Augustin Jean Fresnel originally developed it for lighthouses in 1822: the Fresnel lens. The innovative feature of this lens: The refractive surface consists of steps that gradually reduce its thickness. The lens, thus, consists of prismatic sections and is composed of parallel strips or concentric circular rings. Thanks to this design, considerable amounts of material are not needed, yet a Fresnel lens has the same refractive power as a "normal" lens.

This also affects the use of such a lens in spotlights. This is because nowadays the field of application of Fresnel lenses is not limited to lighthouses, as they are also an integral part of spotlights used on theater stages and in television studios. In this function, the spotlights provide uniform light without hot spots or other noticeable drawings. An easily adjustable beam angle, especially in combination with barn doors, guarantees precise illumination – a fact that is of immense importance, especially in theater or film. After all, not all light is the same: A scene can quickly take on a different meaning through different lighting and, thus, change the character of a play.

The Fresnel lenses in our range rely on halogen lamps on the one hand but are increasingly using the latest generation of COB LEDs. These light sources save energy, emit less heat and are cheaper to purchase. In addition, the LED Fresnel lenses impress with a high color rendering index: The CRI of the spotlights sometimes has values of over 90.

The LED Fresnel lenses are also convincing in other respects: Equipped with a 200 warm white LED, the color temperature of the EUROLITE LED THA-250F Theatre Spot, for example, is 2.800K and the color rendering index (CRI) is 92. The spot's beam angle is also freely selectable between 5 and 38 degrees. The spotlight can be controlled via DMX, RDM, stand-alone, LED PC-Control 512, Light Captain and Light'J. Therefore, the spotlight is particularly suitable for sensitive applications such as video productions or studios, but can also be used on stages in theaters.

Of course, you will also find classic Fresnel spotlights with halogen lamps in our range. The EUROLITE Theatre Spot 2000 Fresnel sw, for example, is a professional theater spotlight, controllable via Plug and Play. It is supplied with a color filter frame and protective grille and convinces with an impressive light output. The beam angle of the Fresnel lenses ranges from 10 to 45 degrees. Like the spotlights with COB LED, the Theatre Spot – as its name suggests – is particularly suitable for use in theaters or studios.

If you have any questions about our LED spotlights, their color temperature or CRI value, our staff will be happy to answer them. We will also be happy to advise you on the right illuminants for your next project!
