A journey through history

The triumphant advance of fairy lights began in New York in 1882, when Edward H. Johnson, Vice President of the Edison Electric Light Company and friend of Thomas Edison, fitted the Christmas tree in his drawing room with an electric light. This string of lights shone with color. The 80 walnut-sized light bulbs shone in white, blue and red. This colorful string of lights caused quite a stir: Passers-by often stopped in front of Johnson's house on the famous 5th Avenue to marvel at the colorful lighting. Not everyone could afford such lights for their Christmas tree at home. To be able to use the fairy lights, a so-called "wireman" had to be brought in and connect each individual light bulb. In addition, a connection to the emerging power grid or a power generator in the cellar was a mandatory requirement.

The spread of fairy lights was probably supported by former US President Grover Cleveland. In 1895, he had a Christmas tree equipped with electric lights installed in the White House. In 1903, General Electric – formerly Edison Electric Light – brought out a string of lights that was already fully wired and only needed to be plugged into a socket.

More than just decoration

Around a hundred years later, the Japanese company Johuku Manufacturing launched the first LED fairy lights on the market. Nowadays, LED fairy lights in particular are no longer just used at Christmas but are also used at various indoor and outdoor events. No matter where you use the LED fairy lights, their effect is impressive: They lend a romantic atmosphere to weddings, for example, while outdoor summer parties tend to look dreamy, "bohemian" or cozy thanks to the use of LED fairy lights.
